When To See A Fertility Specialist?

Many women today have misconceptions as to how much their age and their “biological clock” play a role in their quest to have children. Few women or couples expect to have trouble getting pregnant as they attempt to have a family, but statistics tell us that 1 in 8 couples in the U.S. will face some form of infertility in their lifetime and only 50% of them will ever seek infertility treatment.

At IRMS we know that with the scientific advances made in the field of reproductive medicine and with pregnancy rates from these treatments on the rise as a result we want more people to be informed and seek treatment if having a baby is their goal.

If you are a woman under the age of 35, it is reasonable to try to conceive on your own for up to 12 months as long as there is no family history that would lead you to believe you may be more prone to fertility issues. These may include a mother or sister who underwent premature menopause, had trouble conceiving or if you have certain health issues of your own such as diabetes or thyroid disease.

If you have tried to conceive under the age of 35 for 12 months with no success it is recommended that you seek an appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist for a complete work-up.

For women of 35 and over a work-up is recommended after 6 months of trying to conceive on your own. A complete workup is critical so patients can move forward with the appropriate treatment for them, knowing all of the options available.

If you are having specific symptoms (e.g. significant pain during intercourse, very irregular or non-existent menstrual cycles, exceptionally painful menstrual periods, etc.), it may be appropriate to seek the opinion of a Reproductive Endocrinologist sooner than recommended above as these may be signs of issues that need to be addressed in your pursuit of a pregnancy.

If having a family is a priority for you, be proactive, be your own advocate and seek the appropriate fertility treatment so that you allow yourself the greatest opportunity for a successful outcome.
